Money Jigs

So now that I've bored you with jig ideas, let's get down to jigs that I know work.

1. My favorite jig is a ½ or 5/8 oz Assalt King Kobra jig. This is an arkie style jig with a Mustad Ultrapoint hook. I like two basic colors, black and red and brown and copper. I fish the black one with a black/red flake full size brush hog. I fish the brown one with a watermelon/red flake brush hog or a plum brush hog. I'll also put on a 3x1 piece of super pork on these jigs if it's cold and feeling more finesse. The 5/8oz King Kobra has accounted for 3 fish over 11lbs for me.

2. My number two jig is a 3/8 or 1/4oz Assalt Stand Up jig. This is a more finesse jig with a "punk" haircut. Depending on how tough the bite is, I may trim out a good bunch of the rubber skirt to give it a narrower profile. It also uses the Ultrapoint hook and an important thing about this jig is that, as the name implies, this thing stands up straight on the bottom. A jig laying on it's side is a lame jig. The trailer looks all wrong and the fish don't respond to it very well. A jig that sits straight and puts the pork or the twin tail grub up at a 45 degree angle gives the fish the right look and makes the fish believe that it's a crawdad.

Between those two jigs and a decent selection of trailers, I can cover a lot of conditions. I also carry some 5/8oz white King Kobra jigs for sight fishing, some 1/2, 3/4, and 1 oz football heads for open water resevoir fishing, and a couple 1oz Strike King jigs for those occasions when I'm really trying to punch through cover, or it's extremely windy and muddy.
